My trip to Finland
by the webmaster
We left Heathrow airport on a cold and windy day in July. Once we arrived in Helsinki (Finland's Capital) we had missed our train to Tampere, leaving us time to explore Helsinki. We wandered down to the docks, and saw a steamship-like funnel. We wandered to it as quickley as we could, and yes, it was! Our first Finnish steamship, the S/S Turso. S/S Turso is a steam Icebreaker. Built to operate in Finland when Finland was under Russias power, Russia decided that they'd quite like the Turso, so they nicked it. In 2004, a preservation group saw Turso (still in service) and bought her for preservation. She is still in preservation today.
Once we finnaly arrived in Tampere, were our first hotel was, we quickly got dinner out of the way, and progressed to Steam Tug hunting. Finland has probadly the largest collection of steam tugs IN THE WORLD. On just that evening we spotted 4. The next morning, we caught a train to Turku, (on the long journey I occupided myself by looking at the PSPS magazine!). Once we at last arrived in Turku, we wandered down to the birth of S/S Suomi. We did a round trip of the lake, from Turku to Jykaslavia (jy-ka-slav-ia) and back again.
To be continued.......
Check back in the next few weeks to see me finish...
